Considering Divorce Post-Quarantine? Why Now Is the Time to Get Started

For many couples, spending more time at home together because of the coronavirus has revealed or deepened cracks in their relationship. A global crisis such as this can truly bring people together or drive them apart. If quarantining with your spouse made you realize you aren’t happy together and you’re considering divorce, the time to act is now.

Every moment you spend in an unhappy marriage is a moment you’ll never get back.

If you feel uncertain about the possibility of a divorce and think your problems may be solved through couples therapy or better communication, we are surely not urging you to rush into a decision. However, if there’s a voice in your head saying, “Well, when you know, you know,” don’t ignore it. The time you spend unhappily ignoring it or hoping against hope that things will change is time you won’t ever get to spend blissfully single or in a new, healthier relationship with someone who’s a better match.

Family courts are backed up upon reopening.

Some uncontested divorces can be resolved relatively quickly outside of court. For those divorces that require litigation to settle disputes over property division or child custody, it may take quite some time for them to be resolved. Courts are further backed up due to the COVID-19 shut down, so it is wise to start the divorce process now to secure your place in line sooner rather than later.

Divorce doesn’t have to be a terrible experience.

While of course ending a relationship is never fun, it doesn’t have to be the dramatic, cut-throat ordeal you often see portrayed on television and in movies. If you and your spouse end your relationship amicably, partner with the right attorneys, and have solid emotional support systems in place, the process can be relatively easy.

Your children can sense your unhappiness.

Many parents cite their children as a reason to stay together. The fact of the matter, though, is that children are extremely aware when there is tension between their parents. In fact, being naturally egocentric, very young children will even blame the discomfort on themselves and it can lead to damaged self-confidence and self-worth. Ultimately, your children will be happier if you are happier. If that means getting a divorce, you should go for it!
