5 Healthy Ways to Manage Divorce Stress

No one ever describes divorce as a fun, relaxing, enjoyable experience. On the other side of it, it is easy to recognize how much happier you are – but you might still dread looking back on the process. Just like everything in life, however, there are healthy and unhealthy ways to deal with the stress that often accompanies divorce.

It’s fine to eat ice cream and cry in the bathtub. In fact, we would recommend doing a healthy amount of that. However, you don’t want to overdose on Ben and Jerry’s. Here are 5 healthy ways to deal with divorce stress:

Find Support

It is dangerous to completely isolate yourself during a divorce, even if that’s what you most feel like doing. Find a support system that is there for you without judgment and with open arms. That could be your friend group, your family, a support group for those in similar situations, a community program, or a therapist. Whatever it is, find it and actually use it.

Keep Moving

Keeping your body active is good for your brain. Getting the proper amount of sleep and engaging in physical activity will help keep you sane and happier, even if you don’t realize it. Make time to take a walk or choose to take the stairs instead of the elevator where you can.

Take Time For Yourself

Everyone’s life situation is different, as is their approach to a divorce. If you have found yourself handling the stress by staying busy and being constantly distracted, pouring yourself into work and family and activities, you have to take some time for yourself too. You have to. If you block out these feelings or try not to think about them, handling the divorce will be so much more difficult in the long run.

Keep a Journal

If you don’t already keep a journal, writing one throughout a divorce can be massively beneficial. It is relaxing, therapeutic, and sometimes even fun! It doesn’t have to be about anything – it doesn’t even have to be about the divorce – but just get some part of yourself down on paper and spend some time working with tangible materials.
